Role of Immunotherapy (IVIG) in the Treatment of Neonatal Sepsis

چکیده
Objectives This study sought to evaluate the effect of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in neonatal sepsis in preterm babies. Methods This clinical trial was done at the NICU of Imam Reza Hospital in Mashhad (Iran) from September 2006 to September 2007. We used a dosage regimen of 1g/kg/day. In this study we had 50 patients with documented sepsis; 25 of them received antibiotics (controls) and 25 of them received antibiotic and IVIG as adjuvant therapy. Finally we compared the outcomes of both groups. Results In this study all septic newborns had positive blood cultures. The most common cause of sepsis in our study was klebsiella (56% of control and 36% of case groups). In both groups we found 62% early onset sepsis. There was no statistically significant difference between mortality rate in two groups (52% VS 48% of case and control, P>0.05). Conclusion This study did not find any significant decrease in mortality rate with IVIG therapy in neonatal sepsis.

Clinical Guideline Adaptation for Treatment of Neonatal Sepsis Based on Frequency of Microbial Agents
Background: Sepsis is one of the most important causes of death in infants. The pattern of bacterial agents responsible for neonatal septicemia changes over time. The main aim of the present study was to provide a clinical guideline adapted for treatment of neonatal sepsis based on the frequency of microbial agents in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Alzahra Hospital, Tabriz, Iran.Meth...
متن کاملProcalcitonin as a Marker of Neonatal Sepsis in Intensive Care Units
Background: The appropriateness of using serum levels of procalcotonin (PCT) for early diagnosis of newborn sepsis is still controversial. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to compare the usefulness of PCT with those of serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) counts in the diagnosis and response to treatment of neonatal sepsis. Methods: A total of 47 ...
متن کاملNeonatal Sepsis: An Update
Sepsis is the most common cause of neonatal mortality. As per National Neonatal-Perinatal Database (NNPD), 2002-2003, the incidence of neonatal sepsis in India was 30 per 1000 live births. Signs and symptoms of sepsis are nonspecific; therefore empirical antimicrobial therapy is promptly initiated after obtaining appropriate cultures. The early manifestations of neonatal sepsis are vague and il...
متن کاملDiagnostic Role of Serum Haptoglobin level in Early Onset Neonatal Sepsis
Background: Introduction: Searching for an ideal marker for diagnosing neonatal infection is still an important concern in every country. There are many biomarkers reported for neonatal sepsis. Haptoglobin is an acute phase reactants which rise in response to infection and injuries. In this report we discussed the efficacy of serum haptoglobin level in different cut off levels in early onset ne...
